"That Summer" by Sarah Dessen is a great book. It is about a 15 year old girl named Haven who is facing a whole lot of problems--her height (She is almost 6 feet tall), her father getting married, AND her sister getting married also, to a boring Lewis Warsher, who just makes her sister Ashley seem as boring as him/5(5). In Sarah’s Words. That Summer was the first novel I sold and for that reason it will always be special. It was actually the third one I wrote, after a terrible book I did in college and one that was marginally better the year after. I never intended That Summer to be a YA book while I was writing it: to me, it was just a novel with a teenage narrator.

P Through a person's teenage life they'll go through a tough heartbreak, no matter how hard you try to avoid it, it happens and that's the way of life. "It was just perfect, just right all at once.". P When everything goes the way you plan, everything seems to be in place and in order, your life seems perfect. I liked some of the other characters, especially Sumner (he reminded me irresistably of my all-time favorite Dessen guy, Dexter), so maybe that's why I was so disappointed by the ending. I still love Sarah Dessen as an author though, and I'm glad her later books found their stride so well. (). In Sarah Dessen's first novel, Haven, a tall, 15 year old girl tries to deal with her life changing summer, while reminiscing about a special one that stood out in her memory. The summer where everything was right and perfect and happy. The summer that her older sister Ashley was dating Sumner, and her parents were happy and together.

That summer by Sarah Dessin is about a girl named Haven and the changes that she went through. The book is about how Haven is about to grow into her own skin. Everything around haven is changing. Her life is affected by the people that surround her in her everyday life such as her sister, her mother, and her father. That Summer by: Sarah Dessen Figurative Language: Hyperbole: "But it wasn't the same: it wasn't bronzed, with pink lips and lashes a mile long.." Pg. Personal Connection: Characters continued.. Setting/Theme I found this book so easy to relate to, it allows you to see that.
